Books Yvette Read in February 2011

Our home learning is getting a bit restricted due to no time at my end. I didn’t have much time for creating materials and I don’t have much energy left at the end of the day. I am getting busier and busier each day in office. Again I guess I am wrong to get a contract job after all.

So now, we spent most of our time doing reading and reading is very addictive now. We can easily spend an hour just doing reading. I managed to get her interest in other book instead of reading those two favourite books she loves from the library by not borrowing them anymore.

I managed to channel her love into this book. The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle. I love Eric Carle book. They are not only story but there are many facts found in his book. This book is about telling time, learning size, shape, learning animals and learning manner. The Grouchy Ladybug didn’t say “please” or “thank you”; it wouldn’t share; it thought it was bigger and more important than anyone else.

I doubt Yvette pick up the “moral” of the story but the catchy line said by Grouchy ladybug really gets into her – “Hey you,” said the grouchy ladybug. “Want to fight?” “If you insist,”….

I planned to continue reading this book in March and plan to do a lapbook study for this.

I managed to get her read aloud these two books for me and found out she could read most of the words in it.

And she could read aloud these two reader books after I  read aloud to her for 2-3 times.

For Chinese reading, I stop giving her 我会读. We revisited 皮皮狗 and found out is was a hit. She loves it so much and both of us have to read to her each night spearately. She loves till the extend she could remember most of the story line in the story and she always want to read them.

Out of these 3 stories, she loves 我不想上幼儿园 the most; especially these line – 呜哇!我也不想上幼儿园!then she skipped a few lines and continue 妈妈不要我了! 妈妈!不哭,不哭,妈妈会来接你的,现在老师和你一起玩!

We made progress for 四五块读. We are at Chapter 5 of book 1 now.

Home Learning – Love Is In The Air

I am late and I always will. Here are all my overdue entries!

V Day 2011 - IMG_0720

We did this 3D valentine craft on 11/2. It doesn’t seem to be easy for Yvette. She really took awhile to figure out to fit the 3 hearts together and did fail badly. I think I need to work on the similar concept with her again.

Here’s the end result – Love is in the air!

V Day 2011 - IMG_0730

On the actual day, we worked together. We made a Valentine Day card for D with his participation!

V Day 2011 - IMG_0782

It is fun making the card together. At the same time we could show affection to each other especially to Yvette.

We read Happy Valentine’s Day, Mouse! by Laura Numeroff for one week. This book is about how Valentine Day is also meant for Friendship and how it can be spent among friends. It is about one sentence per page, simple and easily understand. Yvette took this book very well.

Here’s the end result of our work.

V Day 2011 - 1

There are some unfinished work. I have yet printed out the label and pasted them into a file. And I believe those made up a full picture of Valentine Day all about.

Home Learning – Parts of The Tree

If you are wondering how I could catch up with making home learning material, this is the answer.

Home Learning Tree -IMG_0687

Occasionally  but rare, I do manage to get a seat on train in the morning. The moment I was seated, I will pull out the home Learning material kit to work on it. If I have organized it well, I will be able able to finish one set of material by and during my lunch time. So when I was back home, I  will laminate those materials and will pass to D.

Home Learning Tree - IMG_0684

In the past, I will be the one doing the teaching and D will be the one doing the washing, but our role has swapped because I need to do preparation work for our dinner for the next day.  So D will be the one doing the teaching now. In fact, I always feel D could teach better than me; especially his ability to explain concept such as Maths.

Again, her attention span on learning is still not much to our expectation, but she really pick up the idea/concept fast.

Reading the book they have made just now

At night during bedtime, she was able to match those cards correctly without any of our guidance. One thing for sure, I believe she had already knew most of it and so it didn’t post much challenge to her.

Oh well, it is time for real challenge soon!

P/S: I gotten this idea from this site.

Yu Sheng – The Missing Piece

Remember Yu Sheng is something I have missed out in my learning material. I finally laminated it and just in time for me to teach her more about Yu Sheng.

Today is 人日, I suggested to D we must get some Yu Sheng so that we could toss Yu Sheng at home with Yvette.

Yvette was a bit sceptical. When we were tearing those packet powder and wanting to pour into the vegetable, she looked and held back. Nevertheless, it didn’t take her long to get started. Soon she was holding the disposable chopsticks and started to toss together with us.

I know I am late, but still, I wish to wish everyone out there, Happy Birthday!

Books Yvette Read in January 2011

Most of her time spent on reading in Jan 2011 was all about reading the same books over and over again.

Jan Reading - IMG_0315

Wow! Said The Owl &   Tip Tap Went The Crab by Tim Hopgood are her favourite book in Jan. Go, Dog. Go! is another hot favourite book that she couldn’t let go. Surprisingly, she has the “stamina” to read thru The Cat In The Hat with me several times in Jan too.

Of course I didn’t let Yvette “get away” so easily. There is a niche area on top of our bed. (In the past, we put photos there but now we cleared them away.) We have placed many many new books there so that from time to time, we manage to read her some new books and she did pick up some to browse herself too.

Lastly, we didn’t cover much for 四五块读 too. We are at Chapter 3 of book 1 and the progress was consider slow. The good thing is, Yvette is picking up many new words covered in the Chinese Enrichment class and she loves reading books from 我会读 series.

More Crafts for CNY Home Learning

I will love to have a picture of what Yvette was wearing on the Day 1 of CNY on this site… We love this traditional dress which we made a trip down to United Square to get it before D trip.

CNY Craft - IMG_0549

We did the word 春 during the playdate with Ashlyn and completed the craft with a little “deco”. (I have no idea what is that called.)

CNY Craft - IMG_0713

We did another craft. This is inspired by her son who did in his art class. (Paper collage, sticker and some drawing and colouring.)

With the above, it has concluded 50% of our CNY Learning @ Home. (Part I here.)

Yvette Could Cut with Scissors @ 32 mths

I gotten this scissors (a scissors that could only cut paper) for Yvette before she turned two yo last year. She was not able to cut paper using her first scissors till I gotten her another scissors (real scissors) around 27 mths.

Knowing the fact that both scissors I brought for Yvette will be safe for Yvette to pick up to practice the cutting by herself, I actually left those scissors within her reach. From time to time I saw Yvette picking up those scissors trying to cut by herself. The more she practice, the more she gets the hang of it. It’s a skill that takes practice.

Soon at 3oth mths, I know she could cut pretty well and I believe still there is room for improvement. Learning how to grasp and use scissors isn’t easy thus I didn’t really create opportunity to cut with her, or even practice with her, I left this to her.

At 32 mth, I realised she had already mastered how to cut a straight line without help and also she could follow the line to cut too. She could cut diagonally but still couldn’t cut a round shape.

We started this activity book yesterday and within 2 days, she completed all the exercises in this book. And from doing all these exercises, I am amazed how persistent and determine Yvette are – taking ownership to cut.

As I mentioned, my style is to let Yvette develop this skill independently, and I know she is almost there. If you are not comfortable with this method, you could read this site for more tips on how you could help your child to learn to cut.

Happy cutting!
