Tims Restaurant & Café

Sometimes when my friends asked me what is nice to eat in Toa Payoh, I have no idea how to answer them. I have been staying here for about 10 years and been eating most of the food in TP many many times.

Finally I have something to recommend after dinning at Tims Restaurant & Café. Honestly speaking, I only got to know this café a few weeks ago (although they have been in operation for years) after buying some stuff from a spree via Singapore Motherhood Forum. This Café is located at Blk 95 Toa Payoh Lor 4. Not knowing what to eat after our afternoon nap, we woke up and I suggested to my hubby to head to this café that was only 5 mins walk away from our house.

We ordered a kid meal for Yvette. (Kid meal consists of one main course, one drink and one ice-cream and it only cost S$5.50) Hubby had Chicken cutlet and I got Aglio-Olio with Salmon. We added S$3 to make a set meal on top of the main course we ordered. The crowd never stop to pour in. It was really crowded when we were there and before we left, the café was still very packed with people. (We were lucky to get the only seat left when we arrived.)

The food is really worth the price paid (our meal only cost us S$31.30) and the serving is really big. The banana cake is also superb! And I would say it’s worth making a trip down. If you are still not convinced, you can read more review here.

Our Stay with Meritus Mandarin

We had gotten a shock when we checked in. The event manager knew this room was meant for my family and she gotten the bed wrong. Instead of giving us a shared bed, they given us two single beds. However we decided to keep this room mainly due to there will be many people staying in this room later and my dad will need on bed to rest. Having an additional bed in the room will be helpful.

One unusual item we found in this room is; there is a weighting machine on the floor. Very surprise to find this but well on the other hand, I think this hotel is thoughtful to provide “this service”.

After settling down, I bathed Yvette upon check-in in the bath tub. This time, due to my previous experience I gathered during our Hong Kong trip, I held Yvette’s body in between my leg when I showered her. This round, it works. She never cried. After dressing her, we brought her to Taka where situated next to the hotel to get a pair of shoes for her for the night.

She dozed off during the important event of the day.

Dinner ends late as usual. It’s 11 pm when we were up in our room with my SIL’s family (Hubby’s second sis). Feel tiring. But Yvette was still FULL of energy!

She finally entered her dreamland at 12.30 am. We pushed the bed near the wall to react on the possibility Yvette might fall from the bed during the night. We called for house-keeping service to request additional pillow for additional cushioning we wanted to create. We have to keep calling (total 3 calls we made) and waited for more than half an hour before I have my pillow.

We missed the breakfast the next day morning and decided to go up to my brother’s suite to have meal together. We found out they do have complimentary breakfast and S$50 voucher to spend.

I checked out at 12 noon at the reception but it was really a chaos. I overheard some customers were complaining over their “slowness”. It’s indeed reflected lack of organize and room for improvement.

While waiting, I saw one tourist need to change his fifty dollars notes into a small denominator. But the customer service staff need to go to each individual counter to check whether is there any small notes for her. In the end, she went into the café (cashier) to get her job done. Why isn’t a counter for this service? Or why the counter for this service was of service today?

We remained in my brother’s suite for meal.

I found out Yvette’s clothing was left in our room. With no more access to the room, I have to call the house-keeping service again. This round, they didn’t let me wait. They quickly arranged someone to meet me outside the room.

Another miscommunication between my SIL and the cashier was; it was agreed they will come up to the suite to settle all the bills for the dinner. But they have assumed that my SIL will go down to settle the bill. Haiz, perhaps their work load for the day after Christmas was really demanding. But obviously they were lack of manpower or there might be room for improvement for their back-end systems. Anyway, they did come out to sort out the final bill before we left.

Well, overall our stay with Meritus Mandarin was considered fine but not impressive for a 5 stars hotel.
